I am in no way religious, but interested in philosophies found within religions. It seems to me that the code of ethics found within the Abrahamic faiths are somewhat lacking. The first four commandments are completely worthless as ethical guidelines, and there is nothing said against rape, harming children, harming animals, etc.
Although The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth contains some violent phrasing, as well as one rule covering "magic", all things considered it seems to be more complete and applicable to life in human society than The Ten Commands (and not just because the Satanists "turn it up to eleven").
The Ten Commandments
*
You shall have no other gods before Me.
*
You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
*
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
*
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
*
Honor your father and your mother.
*
You shall not murder.
*
You shall not commit adultery.
*
You shall not steal.
*
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
*
You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.
The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth
*
Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
*
Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
*
When in another's lair, show them respect or else do not go there.
*
If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy.
*
Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
*
Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved.
*
Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
*
Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
*
Do not harm little children.
*
Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
*
When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they don’t stop, destroy them.
Yes, I realize that any one of us could probably come up with a better ethical list, but my point is that it seems to me that a fringe group such as the Church of Satan has a better list than a group as widespread and a part of our society as The Christian Church (and all its variants). What do you think? Please confine the discussion to the respective lists of rules/commandments.
